I would like to talk some Baseball, obviously…

–National Post article about Burnetts comments at bottom of page

There is nothing wrong with what AJ Burnett said.

If this was a hockey story and highly rated player said that he wanted to leave the Nashville Predz for the Maple Leafs then Toronto locals would likely say silly things like, ‘he must certainly have hockey IQ’ or something ignorant like that and treat that person with the red carpet…people in Toronto are not sports fans, they Leafs fans and they’re too quick to rip Blue Jays players…

In the first game against the Cubs I had some friends ask me why didn’t Sweet Lou Pinnella start Reed Johnson, well first of all you don’t get a wicked nickname like Sweet Lou for nothing; and Sweet Lou, in your favorite baseball narrators opinion, was aware that Reed was a fan favorite and would have madd butterflies, also he knows that Reed is crazy awsome in clutch off the bench situations and is the answer to the question, ‘where did the clutch hitting go?’ to Jays fans, and Sweet Lou wanted to steal the home crowd advantage late in the first game, and he did even though Reed grounded out and the Cubs lost that game…

When I can take my family to the SkyDome aka Rogers Center for Fathers Day and four of us can enjoy the game way cheaper than one persons admission to the ACC, I think people should get behind a team that has potential to make a run instead of a team that would have you take out a second mortgage to catch a game…I think I’m attacking the Leafs and it’s fans today, even though I would be counted as one too…

If Major League Baseball is considering video playback then they too should examine the fact that empty stadiums in August mean no revenue–which continues the rut of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer; either institute a salary cap or add a couple teams to the playoffs since there are a lot more teams in baseball now than were in the league one hundred years ago and empty ball parks are a damn crime that can be fixed…

My Blue Jays All Star Picks are:

Matt Stairs DH

Scott Rolen 3rd

Vernon Wells CF *VW has the best chance

Aaron Hill 2nd

Rod Barajas C

…unfortunately I don’t think any of my picks will be on the Yankee field for the All Star game since Toronto dosn’t have any sports fans just Leaf fans– I say this because I was ashamed that you could hear the Cubs fans over the Jays fans yesterday.

Though I still believe and have high hopes in this next group of Jays I have a list of 2008 players who I wish would get on a roll:

Lyle Overbay

Dave Eckstein

Alex Rios

Brad Wilkerson

Shannon Stewart

AJ Burnett

…all of whom could too be All Star considerations.

Burnett reiterates desire to play for Cubs
Jays ace stirs up controversy for second time this month

TORONTO — The last time A.J. Burnett scorned his home fans, he apologized.

This time, he says he does not care what the fans think.

After his Toronto Blue Jays lost to the Chicago Cubs Sunday, Burnett said he would welcome the chance to switch sides. He stressed that he remains loyal to the Jays, but reiterated what he earlier told a Chicago newspaper: Given the choice, he would prefer to pitch for the Cubs.

“Who would not want to play for the Cubs, bottom line?” he said.

In a post-game media scrum, Burnett took pains to emphasize his commitment to the Jays. If Toronto fans take exception to his comments, so be it, he said.

“I don’t really care if the fans take it,” he said. “If they can’t read the part that I said where I’m at right now in my mind, then whatever. I’m a Blue Jay now. I’m a Blue Jay until they tell me otherwise. I’m proud of that.”

On June 7, Burnett apologized after he sarcastically tipped his cap to booing home fans on his way off the field in the fifth inning. He had allowed eight runs to the Orioles. After the game, he acknowledged his mocking display was “was something I should never have done.”

An interview published Sunday put Burnett back in the spotlight. A Chicago Sun-Times reporter asked him how he felt about the possibility of a trade to the Cubs, who seek to strengthen their rotation.

“If something were to happen and I’d have the opportunity to go to a place where baseball is breakfast, lunch and dinner, that would be awesome,” Burnett told the Sun-Times.

”Right now my focus is with this club, but if something like that were to happen, I’d accept it with open arms.”

Toronto’s appetite for baseball does not measure up to the Windy City’s, he said Sunday.

“Nothing against Toronto,” he said. “That’s just how it is in Chicago.”

Burnett, who is 6-6 with a 4.90 ERA, signed a five-year, US$55-million deal with Toronto before the 2006 season. His contract allows him to opt out and become a free agent after this season.

If Burnett left on his own, the Jays would likely get two draft picks in compensation. But in a bid for a better return, they will likely test the trade market before the July 31 non-waiver deadline.

Contending teams might well covet Burnett as a rental pitcher in a pennant race. The question for Toronto is how much a trade partner would be willing to give up.

General manager J.P. Ricciardi refused comment Sunday on Burnett’s remarks. So did manager John Gibbons.

Teammate Vernon Wells said Burnett “seemed shocked” at the Sun-Times story when the two discussed it before Sunday’s game. Wells did not say who initiated the discussion, but was ready with his own answers when reporters approached him.

“[Burnett] knows the situation,” Wells said. “He knows he can opt out at the end of the year, obviously. He’s a grown man. He can say what he wants to say. All we care about is if he’s still loyal to this team, which I know he is.”

Wells added, “There’s been a lot worse things said by teammates I’ve been with than that.” He might have been thinking of Shea Hillenbrand’s infamous “This ship is sinking” remark in 2006, which earned Hillenbrand a confrontation with manager John Gibbons and a quick release.

Wells said he does not consider Burnett’s comments distracting or divisive.

“He said he wouldn’t mind playing for a first-place team. Obviously, Chicago’s a great city. He knows what his job is. His job is to pitch for us, and he answered a question truthfully, I guess. He’s going to have to answer questions about it.”

When the questions came yesterday, Burnett said: “My focus and my intent right now is I’m a Toronto Blue Jay and my focus is toward this team and helping this team win.”

And despite punctuating his reply with a peculiar mathematical reference, Burnett suggested he might still be a Blue Jay in 2009.

“Everybody’s talking about me opting out but nobody’s talking about me staying. There’s a hundred percent chance of that just as well,” he said.

That percentage may have just taken a dip.

15 of 21

The Blue Jays have won 15 of the last 21 games.

In blackjack one would hardly be satisfied with 15 of 21, but the Blue Jays with a couple aces up their sleeve look poised to double down every series they enter.

The  team is in position to make a run for the division.

On the table right now, the 15, is a Ace of clubs and a four of hearts…

Roy Halladay is obviously the club ace…

4 players that have been the heart of team with the Ace of the Club are the rest of the starting rotation who’ve been huge in the last 21…

Since we’re talking cards today, we need someone to get us closer to a Blackjack and that would be a #6 who is Jonny Mac; but Alex Rios, who with the numbers on his back can sum up the needed wildcard, is the catalyst to get us to the jackpot.

The Garbage Man

What happened to the garbage man?

Last season’s commercial of AJ Burnett was almost a premonition of what was to come this season, AJ adding the garbage pitch to his repertoire; however most amateur reporters like yours truly think we were fed another line from Riccardi and when it comes down to it AJ is over paid, over hyped and when the Jays were in talks with the Marlins and had a shot at Beckett they should have stuck with plan A; however, when AJ’s curveball is on there really isn’t anyone better in the business.

So I ask again, what happened to the garbage, man?

As most Blue Jays fans know AJ got in a fight with his Land Rover and it bit off his fingernail rendering him unable to have command of his curveball.  Fortunately this gave AJ the opportunity to turn some lemons into lemonade and work on his garbage pitch, aka the change-up during spring training.  Apparently it was coming around until that infamous Land Rover of his delivered him to a nail salon where AJ received a phony nail to help him throw his curveball; and that curveball was there in New York game 2 of the season baffling the Bronx Bombers of the Evil Empire.  Sadly since game 2 of the season of great expectations AJ has been a disappointment and what is worse I was talking that guy up like crazy this past off season because I thought after how he finished off last season with 10 dominant games and more importantly I thought with the contractual opt out/renegotiate clause at the end of this season he would find that consistency that has been missing in his injury plagued career–or that extra motivation most professional athletes seem possess in a contract year.

Yeah, I know this season is early; but, when only 3 teams per conference are allowed in the playoffs (which must be changed to save the game), a slow start and losing streaks will lead to another disappointing season.

Moving along the rotation, the number three pitcher Dustin McGowan did well to hold the O’s to 3 runs in 6 innings and give his team a chance to win. Unfortunately the bats were not there as Baltimore’s Albers and the most improved pitching staff in baseball held the lead for the eleven thousand fans at Camdon and took the AL East lead.  Sadly it came down to Zaun who couldn’t keep the game going and make up for not holding the baserunners.  On a positive note, Shannon Stewart made a phenomenal throw home from out field to catch a greedy Jay Payton.
